𓍯𓂃 drawings (2020-2023)

the horned figures in my drawings are inspired by, what i find to be, the most compelling character in Haitian kanaval. i started drawing them in 2020 after seeing a photo of man covered in oil with bold horns placed atop his head. his smile reminded me of one of my favorite paintings by Kerry James Marshall. i find i am continuously drawn to these figures both in my publicly shared artwork and in my private sketches. as i live through the evolution of a slavocratic and elitist society that specifically utilizes hierarchy to place the darkest, blackest humans at the bottom and the whitest humans at the top, i am fascinated by the sheer terror that the Haitian Revolution inspired into white slavocratic americans and how that same terror exists presently. as a Haitian descendant, i admire this kanval's character's reverence for our African origin and how the character kind of... playfully engages the history of being a slavocracy's worst nightmare. in my drawings in particular, these characters are at peace, resting, utilizing transpersonal processes like meditation, healing childhood wounds, casting spells in communion with other black horned figures—while the white american imagination screams in terror at the sight of their free neighbors (Haitians, Black people who have freed themselves from their enslavers and dared to claim that they are human beings of equal standing), those same Haitians, free Black people are busy learning to enjoy life in the aftermath, focused totally on defending and nourishing their freedom, health, and wellness (particularly the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health & wellness). these drawings, then, are also an offering to the altar of the healing of all Haitians, which is much needed.additionally, as both a Haitan and Ghanaian descedant, i enjoy the way that these figures challenge christian zealotry. many Haitians and Ghanaians are now enslaved by christianity itself. i also enjoy how these figures/images revere our Ancestors' pre-christian spiritual philosophies as well as reflects a growing culture of post-christian spiritual connection adapted to our present conditions.

“i really like the imagery of 10 of swords. the still water, the sunrise backing a body pierced by 10 swords. even amidst crisis there are moments of stillness and a chance to begin again.i didn’t want the body to take up the whole image like the card. after all this page is about forgetting yourself in the landscape, first and foremost. so this is how this week felt: bitter and piercingly painful yet grounded by the truth of it all: pain passes and a new moment begins. and when i zoom out, there’s still a beautiful world around me.in the most painful moment, i asked myself what i needed to express and it was the sense that everything felt very very hard yet, for once, i also sensed the sunrise and the still water as much as the feeling of pain…”oil pastel

𓍯𓂃 aura portraits [floral arrangements] (2021-present)

i began playing with PlantStudio (1998), a "Botanical Illustration Software is a tool for creating 3D plant models and 2D illustrations" in 2017. i've been creating my own plants with the program since then and now have a digital garden unique to my tastes and experiments. i use the plants i breed to create "aura portraits," rendering a momentary energy in the form of a digital floral arrangement.if you'd like to try creating your own garden of digital plants, click here.

SELF-LOVE
2025"each astrological season, i channel and create a talisman that reflects a seasonal theme. this talisman was created after i woke up from a dream on the first day of leo season with one phrase on the tongue: SELF-LOVE. the day before, i had a number of seemingly unconnected (at first) conversations with elders that focused on this theme: without self-love, humans are more likely to deny themselves and destroy whatever loving structures are built. in order to support our worldbuilding efforts, self-love-`♡- total self-acceptance, total self-forgiveness, self-devotion-♡´-need to be nourished and protected. may this talisman be like a love letter to yourself. when you spend time with this image, take some time to adore yourself and listen to your needs <3like leo, this talisman is also an ode to creative self expression, joy, play, warmth, enthusiasm, fanning the inner flames of a heart ablaze, a bit of drama and flair, each of our needs for our light to be mirrored back to us, and the beauty of each being's unique melody and rhythm in the polyphony of Life. may this talisman support you in sharing the light of your true self :)"
